Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

My wife and I recently had a baby - there were no issues during birth and everything went fine. 2 Months after the birth I get a bill from a company I had never heard of requesting payment for neonatal services for $1,115.00. I called the company to ask who they were and what they think they did as a servie to us and how they got my information as I do not remember us needing a neonatoligist. They replied that they were called in "by the hospital" as a matter of routine. They also had my wifes SS# - we had not given it to this company. My question is ... we did not authrize this expense and and had no knowledge of this firm so (a) can they bill us and (b) is it legal for them to obtain our SS# from another source other my wife ? e.g. Perhaps the hospital gave it to them - I have not established how they got it yet.

You probably did authorize them to provide services in the paperwork that you signed. Contact them and see what they did and ask for their authority to do so.

Contact the hospital about whether they gave this company your information. Review any documentation to see if you gave consent in any signed documents. There is valuable information about health information privacy at http://www.hhs.gov.
