Yes, he or she can. Your employer can also ask you to provide a doctor's note if that is the company policy. He should not necessarily be inquiring into the specific medical details (i.e. that you are HIV+ or suffering from Hep C or a herpes outbreak), but he is entitled to know the general nature of the specific reason you cannot come to work (for example, you ghave a temperature and are throwing up, your bad back is hurting and you can't get out of bed, you hgave a migrane, you have the flu, etcetera).
