If your j1 visa expired and you have not taken steps toward addressing your immigration status, you may be considered illegal. If you married a U.S. citizen spouse, that person can petition for you by filing an I-130 then an I-485, Application to Adjust Status and if you want to work while you are waiting for your application to be processed, an I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. Forms and instructions are at www.uscis.gov
