The purpose of the sponsor is only to show that the foreign national will not become a "public charge." So the only problem that a sponsor could create is not having sufficient income or assets to prove this point (sometimes someone "on the line" financially will have trouble convincing the USCIS on the public charge issue).

The other more likely scenario is that the government didn't believe the marriage was legitimate. You really do need to find an attorney to evaluate your situation.
