Legal Question in Insurance Law in Florida

Disputed Appraised Value

A Oriental rug was damaged due to a water leak that collapsed part of my ceiling. My homeowners policy paid for the repairs to the ceiling and also to have the rug cleaned. The rug was returned to me but I refused to accept it because the stained area was still noticeable. The insurance company picked up the rug and sent it out for appraisal. The company they sent it to is a general contracting firm that specializes in cleaning and restoration. They appraised the rug at $650.00. I paid $900.00 for the rug six years ago at a wholesale factory. I do not have a receipt. I disagree with the both the appraised value and with the qualifications of the firm that provided it. My insurance company is about to send me a check. Can I dispute the appraisal and how do I go about it?. Also do I have to pay for any of the costs involved in contesting this matter?.

Re: Disputed Appraised Value

Read your policy. It should include a procedure for contesting their offer. I suggest you get it appraised by an expert.
