I am writing to find out if a moving company is liable to pay for lost or broken items that ocurred during a household move and what to do if the company has moved and left no way of contacting them

There are several options you can look at. First, your homeowner's insurance will provide coverage for lost and stolen items. Depending on the circumstances, the coverage from the home you are moving from or the home you are moving to will provide coverage. It is possible that both will provide coverage "pro rata."
Second, if you took out insurance with the moving company, then that insurance company should provide coverage for your losses.
Third, you should file a complaint with www.800helpfla.com/moving for moves within the State of Florida, or www.protectyourmove.gov for moves between states.
