Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Florida
Book/Film Option
I live in the US, and I'm preparing to purchase a two-year option on a biography in order to write a screenplay. The agent (in the UK) has authority to sign for the author. What kind of problems should I look out for? The film would most likely be made in the UK.

Re: Book/Film Option
I am not particularly knowledgeable about the laws/contracts related to screenplays and films.
That said, if the agent of the author is in the UK, the contract may be entered into in the UK, and the film would likely be made in the UK, I think a substantial amount of UK law may apply to the whole deal.
Therefore, I would like to defer to my colleagues who have more experience with these types of deals and better familiarity with UK law.
I can say one thing that has global applicability: DO NOT SIGN THE CONTRACT WITHOUT HAVING IT REVIEWED BY AN ATTORNEY. Your attorney will know what problems to look out for.
