Copyright Question

I am a small soap maker and own such a business. I would like information on copyrighting a soap recipe, if it is possible and what is involved.

Thank you and God Bless you for a safe and Happy Holiday Season

Re: Copyright Question

You have a copyright automatically, without doing anything further, on creation of your recipe. You need a copyright registration in order for a court to have jurisdiction to enforce that copyright. A copyright registration is obtained by application, at a fee of $30, to the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress. You should have a copyright attorney do the first copyright application for you to be sure it is done right, which should cost $130-300. (I currently charge $130 for that.) Once you see how the copyright attorney prepared the first copyright application, you can probably do subsequent ones for yourself.

If your recipe is really unique and valuable, you might consider patent protection, as that will give you probably broader protection, although for a shorter (20 years for patent vs. life+70 years for copyright.
