Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Florida
Publishing pictures of public figures
I'm thinking of publishing a photo essay which
will include pix of public figures. Are there any
circumstances under which it would be necessary to
obtain signed releases from the subjects? Thanks.

It depends on the rules in your state. I think you need to receive permission from all of your subjects. However, if the six people you mention are public celebrities I do not believe you have to receive permission. I am only guessing becuase I doubt the the National Enquirer gets permission to publish the pictures of celebrities that the publish. I would call a local newspaper and ask them. They would probably know since they print pictures everyday. I am almost positive that you need a signed release from all private citizens that you photograph and subsequently publish. Good luck.
