law Verses Statues
Sorry about the subject line, I wasn't sure which area this question went into.
Can something be a law, yet not a statue? A human being is a legal term that denotes a person w/ rights. Is that a statute, and if not, how is the term binding?

You're asking a pretty basic question about jurisprudence, much too lengthy to answer here, but laws can be provided not only in statutes, but in the constitutions of the U.S. and the states, in treaties, in appellate court decisions, in local county and municipal laws, etc. I don't recall that the term "human being" has any legal significance--though I could be wrong--but the term "person" has great legal significance. You can read Roe vs. Wade to learn more about the term, "person."
