Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Can you be bound to your job of a given period

If you sign with a company that ''requires'' you to work for them for 2 years, do you have a legal right to leave after one year? In other words, are there laws that protect the individual from remaining with a company despite wanting to move elsewhere?

Re: Can you be bound to your job of a given period

In Florida, an enforceable employment contract requires that the contract be in writing, for specific term, and set forth the basis/manner of compensation. In the absence of a valid and binding employment agreement, both the employee and employer are free to terminate the employment relationship "at will," for any reason at any time.

An employee can generally leave a job with or without a contract. HOWEVER, the terms of a written contract will generally have provisions stating what the consequences are to the employee for breaking the employment contract.

If there is no written contract, then either employer or employee can terminate the relationship.

If there is a written employment contract, then you should seek advise from an attorney regarding the consequences of breaking the contract.
