changed mind after signing contract

I signed a 1 year contract with a company as an independent subcontractor. After signing the contract and buying the software, I received some negative feedback about the company and have changed my mind about working for them. Can I break the contract without legal penalties?

It all depends on what the contract says, expressly, about termination by either party.
