Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Do I have a Claim after Being Fired After Mother's Death?
I was employed by a Corporation from 6-2001 to 5-2002. (I had been employed by the same, at a different store previously.) My mother passed away in January and I had taken bereavement leave for that purpose. In April, I had requested a leave of absence to take care of family business in South Florida, which is where my mother resided. I stated to my supervisor that I did not know how long it would take, but I would call him upon my return. He agreed. When I returned (a week later), he informed me that I no longer had a job. I filed for unemployment and won, but now they have appealed and the decision was reversed. Now unemployment is sending me bills for the money overpaid, and I have appealed. I am getting the run around from unemployment and I need some answers. Please advise, should I contact a lawyer?

There is no legal protection that I could imagine under these facts. Additionally, overpayments are rarely actually pursued so you probably don't have much to fear even if you lost your UE Appeal.
