Can a company cut your pay

Can a company cut the pay of an individual by two dollars an hour. I work for a company that creates updated information on companies and forgot to spell back the word Chicago. I had been called into the office on a prior occasions but not notified if I forgot to spell something back to the customer, I would have a pay cut. Is this legal?

Do you have an employment contract that specifies pay.?. otherwise the fed. wage and hour act and the fair labor standards act regulate this as well as the civil rights statutes(EEOC).

In regard to the discipline, does your company or personnel manual practice, require or maintain "progressive discipline" procedures..did did it clearly state that you could be penalized for not "spelling back"?... Also, if they cut your pay for a discriminatory(i.e. sex, race, religion, etc.) reason, contain the EEOC or FCHR. follow up immediately so that you are not barred by limitations periods. both private attorneys and federal official can give you more info.. i.e. the EEOC in Tampa, and the local Fed. Dept of Labor investigator.
