If a company is represented by a union and the contract term has expired for what term is the company liable to contribute to the benefit funds?

A company is not represented by a union; employees are. If the company is required under a collective bargaining agreement to make certain contributions to employee benefits, that obligation ends when the contract ends, unless something to the contrary is expressly in the contract.
