Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

employer wants employee to pay insurance deductible

A couple of weeks ago one of the company trucks was broken into (on company property with locked gates) and various company, as well as employee tools were stolen. Some of my tools were on that truck and were subsequently stolen. Approximately 1 week later, another company vehicle was broken into (again on company property) and the remainder of my tools were stolen (along with the tools of a co-worker and the company).

My employer is insisting that I pay the insurance deductible of $500.00 because I was the last employee to drive the first vehicle that was broken into.

Is it legal for an employer to insist upon an employee paying this deductible?

Thank You

Re: employer wants employee to pay insurance deductible

There is no law that either allows or disallows your employer from asking you for this money. If you refuse to pay--which I would--you'll probably be looking for a new job, so its a tough spot you're in.
