Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Employment Contract
SELECTED FLORIDA AS TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS WAS NOT LISTED. I have an employment contract in the Turks & Caicos Islands for 1 year, effective Sep 1, 2007. Since being here, each month my paycheck has been late, up to 14 days. I've had to wait up to 3 months to be reimbursed for expenses. This has seriously impacted my ability to make timely payments on my US mortgage, credit cards, utilities, car and rent/utilities here in the TCI.
Consequently, I'm having to look for alternative employment. I'm in upper management so I will likely either have to move back to Florida or overseas in order to find something a.s.a.p. I will have the expense of shipping my personal effects from here.
My contract is with a Turks and Caicos Islands based company and issues of employment ore covered by the TCI Employment Ordinance. Per the EO, if I terminate because my employers conduct has made it unreasonable to continue, I shall be deemed to have been unfairly dismissed. Per the EO, if my contract was for an UNspecified period of time I'd be eligible for two weeks pay, however it does not refer to a contract with a specific period of time.
I feel I was mislead. Do I have a case for suing for the outstanding amount of my annual salary, or anything?

Re: Employment Contract
Hard to tell -- but I doubt it. The laws of the T&C would apply, not those of Florida, so you really can't rely on Florida advice. You would really need to see a lawyer or solicitor down there to get any decent information on your rights. I would read your entire contract carefully. Your rights will start with that document.
Good luck.
