Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Fired due to illness

My mother has been working for a company for the pass 25 year. Last September she became very ill and was not able to work. The beginning of this year she was placed on short term disability for 12 weeks, but had to return back to work because she at risk of loosing her medical insurance. Since she returned to work her supervisor told her that she will be fired because she is not able to perfom on the job due to her illness. Can you be fired from a job because you are sick? Is this Legal?
