Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Hello:

I own a small business in Florida. I recently employed a young man for a short time to help us during one of our busy seasonal rushes. Well, after his short tenure was over, it turns out that his cash register was short 100's of dollars a day (one day was nearly $1000 short!).

Can I withhold his final paycheck to help recover some of the money this sticky-fingered employee stole?

Not that it's pertinent, but I looked him up on the local sherriff's website, and to my horror discovered he was arrested for petty theft just a few weeks before he was hired for his short stint here.

Hurry, payday is tomorrow!

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Not likely, since proof is slim if non-existent. Call the police and let them investigate the matter.
