Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Legality of forcing employee to pay uniform cost

Hi everyone, just wanted some advice on how to pursue this issue. I work at a restaurant in the Tampa Bay area. My employer has been taking small amounts of money out of our weekly checks to pay for our new uniforms without our consent. I didn't know this was happening until two weeks after they began taking the money out of our checks. I never consented to or signed any document stating the cost of our uniforms or that we would have to pay the full cost of the uniforms. This is a private restaurant with about 20 employees. Please help me!

Re: Legality of forcing employee to pay uniform cost

Have you spoken to your employer? It is not terribly uncommon for a waiter/waitress to be required to buy their uniform. Your problem is that you may be told that if you are unwilling to buy the uniform, then you will not have a job.
