Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Mandatory propogandist meetings

I work on the administrative staff for a professional medical practice with several partners. One partner has recently begun holding bi-monthly, mandatory ''staff meetings'' wherein he extoles the virtues of a specific ''Lifestyle changing program'', i.e. Landmark Education, Scientology, Dianetics, etc., and workshops specific situations within the stated program's course curriculum. He has actually begun blatantly promoting it and recommending it to his staff, going so far as to offer a partial office reimbursement to any staff members who choose to attend as well as encouraging the group to attend his own free seminar on the subject. I am not interested in this and ethically, I feel it should be my choice whether or not to attend such a meeting. I'm concerned about losing my job if I refuse to attend these ''mandatory meetings''. Ethics aside, would I have any legal recourse or grounds for a civil suit in such an event?

Re: Mandatory propogandist meetings

Good question. There is a fine line between what would be considered motivational material and religious propaganda. Without knowing all the details, and to make the long story short, if it were considered religious (and I suspect Scientology would probably be), then you may have a claim for religious discrimination if you refused to participate and they fire you. You should probably consult with an attorney if it is bothering you enough. It will be worth the consultation fee. I am available for a consultation. If interested, send me an e-mail to coordinate.
