Does an employee get paid for calling out sick the day before a paid holiday?

Both paid sick days and holidays are not controlled by laws but are controlled by the terms of the employment agreement/relationship between the employer and the employee.

So there is no direct answer to your question. It depends on the terms, rules, and/or policies established by the employer.

Therefore, if there is a rule that the employee must work the day before and/or after a holiday to get holiday pay then that is the guideline. If there is no rule, than an employee may have an argument for being paid both sick pay and holiday pay.
