Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Pay due to hurricane or other ''acts of God''
In the event of a hurricane like we just had, Wilma, is there any law that dictates an employer pay you when it is out of your hands that you did not work? The specific situation is that we only had two lines operable and so they in effect told me to stay home and thereby did not pay me.
Thank you.

Neither Florida nor Federal law require that an employee be paid for missed full days of work due to a hurricane unfortunately. There is simply no provision for it. However, the President did sign some legislation that led to aid for employees affected by Katrina, so maybe in the future the Florida legislature will pass a law that provides protection to Floridians in the future.
