Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

References

I was wondering if a previous employer can give bad references that are not true and that have kept me from being employed for almost 2 years. I heard that a previous employers cannot say more than yes they worked here and yes/no we would hire them back. If they are not allowed can i sue them for slander or defermation of character?
