Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Required to attend scientology classes
I was working for a physician's office until November 2004. Once I was hired and began my first week of work, I was notified one day that it is time for ''class''. I was supplied with a paper to sign stating that I voluntarily agreed to attend these classes, for which we were paid our regular salary while participating.
All employees of the office attended, and it was clear it would be a problem if one declined to attend, very clear.
The office closed down for and hour, to hour and a half each week for class.
The teachings were scientology based.
I attended for several months, then voiced that I decided not to participate. I offered to leave the office during class and receive no pay, or to stay and work.
My employment lasted for about four weeks after, then I was asked to leave.
Just looking for an opinion on this situation.
Thanks,

Re: Required to attend scientology classes
I am concerned that it appears your employment was terminated because you did not want to participate in a class that could be seen as "religous" in nature. I think you should discuss your situation with an employment attorney. You can access more information on religious discrimination at the EEOC web site, www.eeoc.gov. In Florida you have a limited time to file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC and so I would not delay in taking some action. I would be happy to talk with you in more detail if you call my office Monday or send me an e-mail when I might reach you.
