When an employee is terminated, can the employer perform a search on his/her personal closed briefcase that was left in the office without permission?

A tough question, but my answer would be no: your employer--terminated or not--is not permitted to open a private briefcase of an employee even if that briefcase was left in the office. However, the real significance is: even if the employer took that action, what harm resulted therefrom?
