Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Specific reason to take sick leave days
A director in a different department puts pressure on my boss to ask me specific questions why I need to take a sick leave day.
Our office does not have any official rule to provide any proof, like doctors notes, to take sick leave and other people are always coming down with mysterious illness and back pain particularly on Mondays and Fridays, which I have never done for past several years.
However, when I requested my sick leave day, I was asked why I would need a sick leave day and how long it would take if it is just one doctor's appointment. I had to explained I have three doctor's appointments, one out of town.
Because of our office environment (unusually gossipy), I always try not to reveal my personal matters as much as possible. while other people take sick leave when they sneeze, I do not want to have to explain specific nature of my sick leave. Is it something my office is entitled to ask me? Do I have to provide information if I am asked while other people are not? There is no office policy I have to and I take my sick leave time within the given amount of time. Please advise....

Re: Specific reason to take sick leave days
It is not necessarily impermissible for your employer to attempt to verify the reasons for an absence from work, but it is also possible that this is a pretext, or cover, for an illegal action. The specific details of your situation will be very important, so please contact an employment attorney immediately for further advice and feel free to follow up with us in this regard.
