Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Suspended for a week.

Hello. I was late this morning for work because a power outage in my neighborhood. I was written up for it and I refused to sign the write up. My boss said if I did not sign it, I would be suspended from work for one week beginning at the start of the next work week. Is it legal for them to suspend me for not signing a write up?

Re: Suspended for a week.

Employers can create almost any policy they choose and can disapline an employeee for failure to follow these policies. However, an employer cannot create a policy that impacts on certain protected groups of employees more than other employees. That is to say the policy cannot adversely affect an employee because of their age, race, religion, national origin or disability. Further, disapline must be administered equally regardless of age, race, religion, national origin or disability. What this employer did may have been foolish or even unfair, but based on the limited facts given it does not appear to have been illegal. You can send me an e-mail if you want to discuss this further.
