Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida
Terminated for refusing to go to dangerous location
My son has been threatened with termination if he does not go to an assignment in Mexico, which is in political unrest. On other assignments in South America he has seen IBM buildings bombed during these types of social disturbances. He fears for his personal saftey. He offered to go at a later date when the area is better settled.

Re: Terminated for refusing to go to dangerous location
Florida is an employment at-will state, which means that an employer may generally terminate an employee for any reason at any time, with some limited exceptions. Your son's reluctance/refusal to want to travel to a situation he believes to be dangerous is understandable, but probably does not, without more, create a cause of action given the at-will doctrine. To be sure, please consult with an attorney concerning the particulars of his situation.
