termination employment

Our company is being sold I have worked 18 years here. Are they required to compensate me?

There is no federal (or State law in Florida) that requires an employer to provide "severance" pay. However, there is a federal law (called the "WARN" Act) that requires employers to provide 60 days written notice of mass layoffs for certain-sized employers, when a single location is closed at which at least 50 employees are being let go. There are a number of conditions that exist under the Act, but outside of that protection, only a voluntary "severance" plan or severance benefit would provide you with any compensation, aside from unemployment which you can file for.
