Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Termination while on short term disability

Can I get my former employer to pay for

my health insurance? I have been on short

term disability since 6/27/06 while I

recover from colon cancer. On 1/5/07 - I

was terminated for ''budget'' reasons. I

cannot afford Cobra while on

unemployment.

Re: Termination while on short term disability

Wow. This is one of those situations in which a lawyer has to thread carefully not to let the emotions interfere with his judgment. No, you cannot really force your employer to pay COBRA. However, you may have other remedies under discrimination laws depending upon the circumstances surrounding this "budget" reason. However, I truly cannot think of anything that will get you a quick result so that you could instantly get the money to pay for your health insurance, other than unemployment, which does not seem to be enough.
