Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Wrongful Termination

I was recently terminated from my job the company gave me no reason and left me a voicemail on my cellphone. I have worked for this company for a year and have been a loyal employee. This just came out of no where. I just don't see why they would do this to me right before the holidays, I am a single mother of two children and have no other source of income not even child support.

Re: Wrongful Termination

I am very sorry to hear of your plight. If you have not done so, you may apply for unemployment immediately. You can do so online or call for information (and possibly file by telephone).

Otherwise, it is legal for your company to fire you without notice unless there is a contract (either personal, or a labor contract), or a company policy that says different, or unless there was an illegal reason such as race, gender or disability discrimination (all very hard to prove). If you believe discrimination was at play (did they retain a man, for example, who does the same job for the same supervisor but earns more?), you can file a claim for free with the EEOC. They are online at EEOC.gov.

I hope you wind up finding something much better.

Good luck.
