How can I break a 12 month apt. lease, 4 months short of term, to move from Fl. to VA to be with family?

Legally, you cannot break a lease for any reason. It is a binding contract between the landlord and tenant which is enforceable in a court of law.

That said, you might want to negotiate with the landlord for a shorter term. Perhaps, the landlord will accept the forfeiture of your deposit for an early termination. Alternatively, if the lease allows, you can sublet to another person for the balance of the lease. If you are not sure if this is allowed, you should consult with an attorney who can review your lease and advise you.
