Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida
My apartment was broken into around May 3, everything was stolen. I refuse to stay there. I informed the leasing office that I have not stayed there since the break-in and offered to break my lease today 5-6-10 and give them there keys. In my lease it states that in order to break the lease early I must pay $1,542. The leasing office wants me to pay for May and the $1,542. Plus, they said I can't move out until July 1st. Is this legal?

There is no requirement for the landlord to let you terminate your lease early, just because your apartment was broken into. Thus, yes, it is legal for them to charge you these amounts to let you out of your lease early. However, if your lease states otherwise, they would be bound by the specific terms of the lease.
Look at your lease. It should state what you owe for early termination. Typically, you will have to pay rent until they find a new tenant. If your landlord agrees to something different, get it in writing. http://www.800helpfla.com/landlord_text.html
