Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida
I am having a hard time paying my rent because I am not making the money I used to. My landlord told me to consult a lawyer to get a paper that states I cannot afford my rent. What is this?

Unfortunately, you have been given some shoddy advice. No such paper exists and eventually, your landlord will take the necessary steps to evict you. Even if you were to get a "paper" stating that you cannot pay your rent, it is of no consequence as you entered into a legal contract with your landlord to rent that apartment for a specified time. It is best that you begin looking for an apartment that you can afford and work out some type of an arrangement to pay the fee (if there is one) to break your current lease. Or, you may be able to get assistance from a social service agency (i.e. Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, etc). Check your local listings or call 211 for agencies near you. Many of these agencies will pay your rent for one month. Hopefully, that can help you to get ahead.
