Read your lease to determine your obligations.

If the lease requires the insurance, then you have to do it. Frankly, pit bulls are known to be inherently dangerous dogs and Miami-Dade County has outlawed them altogether. It would be in your best interest to have the insurance whether or not required to by the landlord or lease. Many landlords will not allow you to have any animals under any circumstances so this may be a reasonable request.
