Is it legal to get off of an apartment lease with three other people by just writing a letter to the property manager without the consent of the other two tenants?

No. You have a contractual relationship will all of the parties to the lease. You will need a release from all parties, or a good reason to show that they breached the lease, or took some other action that would permit you to be released from you obligation. Just writing a letter doesn't do it.
