Your lease should state who is responsible for maintaining the yard and pool. If your lease does not state this, then you need to get a written agreement with the owner. You do not want to take responsibility for this "attractive nuisance", and the owner needs to have insurance that covers pool liability. If you decide to "board it up", you will also need to make sure that the boarding is complete and child-proof.
