Once you sign a lease, you are responsible under the terms of the lease. You are not off the hook just because you decide not to move in. In fact, your landlord could hold you responsible for all monthly rent payments under the lease until he is able to lease the premises to someone else.
You owe him one month's rent (or an entire year) under the lease you signed, right? http://www.800helpfla.com/landlord_text.html
