Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

We are a tenant temporarily renting a condo for 6 months. The HOA sent us a letter telling us, the current owner of the condo has not paid the HOA dues, and told us we have to pay the the HOA dues or they will evict us. This is in ft. Walton beach, fl. Can the HOA do this and have us evicted even though they do not own the condo? thanks

There is a new Florida law, effective July 1, 2010, that if the owner does not make the HOA payments, the HOA has the right to collect the rent directly from the tenant. Thus, if you receive proper notice from the HOA that the owner is not making the HOA payments, they can have you make rent payments directly to them.
