Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Florida

Possible abuse of sick family member

One of my family members is suffering from cancer. She signed the power of attorney over to her husband (who works in the medical field), as well as a living will.

However, we have reason to believe that, under his care, she is being mistreated. For example, she lives out of state and contacted us via phone, asking us to get her and bring her home, that her husband had literally hid the phone cord from her so she could not make calls, and that she was not being treated well. During the call itself, the husband got on the phone and made passive threats to the effect that we should stay out of it).

Prior to this phone call, other members of my family had visited her and noted that the home care she was receiving was not adequate (both of the visitors are registered nurses, by the way).

We have nothing to gain except the piece of mind that she is being treated well, and perhaps the chance to peacefully visit before she passes. However, we have been threatened with legal action if we were to so much as visit her again.

Is there any legal issue in violation here that we should look into, are is there nothing we can do?

Call whatever agency in the state handles adult protective services or abuse of the elderly and they will investigate the matter.
