Is a physician entitled to compensation when asked to give a deposition by a plaintiff's attorney in a case in which he is not named as a defendent, but has been involved in some aspect of the plaintiff's medical care.

Yes. Reasonable compensation, which can be set by the court if the parties cannot agree on an amount.
