does a doctor have to tell you about all the side affects of a drug and what not to take with them?

They should. Most doctors will ask their patients fill out a form that asks what medications they were already taking. If you disclosed your medications and the doctor still gave you a prescription for something he/she should have known would cause an adverse reaction, and something serious happened as a result, there may be a case for medical negligence.
