what happens to a soldier who before being deployed, comes home on legal leave, but does not return back to base at required time, had no intention of being late upon return, ran into personal problems?

It will depend upon your commander. Commanders typically address this scenario with an Article 15 (non-judicial punishment). Whether the reason(s) for your late return are justified depends upon the circumstances. Note, too, that subsequent misconduct, if any, could put you in a position to have a chapter action initiated.
