Legal Question in Personal Injury in Florida

My brother in law was renting a car on a Sunday. His card needed to be verified on Monday. My wife put her card down but did not sign any papers; his name was on the contract. The car was returned and he paid all fees. Are we the renter and are we liable for any accident liability?
