Firing the lawyer is easy. You just write a letter to him or her doing so. If you have a lawyer working on a contingency, firing the lawyer without appropriate cause, though, obligates you to pay the costs and a reasonable fee, generally calculated by the amount of time that was invested (but there are other factors as well). If you get the lawyer to withdraw from your case without cause, then, almost always, you owe no fee.

Read the Statement of Client Rights furnished by your atorneys. Of course you are obligated to pay any costs incurred and reasonable fee for the time spent in preparation of your case.

You should ask the attorney for a statement of costs and the amount of time expended multiplied by his hourly rate to determine the amount of fee he is claiming.

It also makes a difference if you are firing the attorney for "cause" or if he has abandoned your case.
