Your case cannot be settled without your approval. You can switch attorneys at anytime as long as the statute of limitations has not run and your case is still viable. seek some help from another attorney with all your facts.

I suggest you set up a conference with the lawyer to see what the status is for yourself and ask the important questions yourself.

I regularly have accident victims call my office after never or rarely hearing from their lawyer about their case. That is not how the attorney-client relationship should be, although it is common. You can fire your lawyer anytime. You may or may not have to re-pay him some portion of your recovery, depending on the facts. Your new lawyer may or may not be able to file suit, depending on whether the statute of limitations has run. Your new lawyer also may or may not want to file suit, depending on the degree of your injuries, and whatever treatment you have received. The doctor should not be telling you about a case settlement. The lawyer must get your approval, after communicating the settlement offer to you. If you would like to discuss further, you can reach me at (407) 803-2139. Best of luck to you.
