Legal Question in Personal Injury in Florida
Settlement Disbursement
On October 23rd my attornies settled a personal injury case. They have been working to get reductions on my doctor bills. It has been nearly a month.AllI get is exscuses as to why I have not received my portion of the settlement. How long from date of settlement do the attornies really have to release the monies to me?

Re: Settlement Disbursement
In general, if the bills are the subject of liens or contract rights of reimbursement, nothing can be disbursed until the liens are resolved. Depending on who has the liens, this can sometimes take some time. If the government has the lien (medicare or medicaid), then it may take 6 months to get information from them -- the government is notoriously slow.
If you have LOPs, those can also take a couple of months to resolve.
The alternative is for your lawyers to just pay what the lien holder wants. That is easy for them but you end up with less money in the end.
As an average, depending on the number of doctors and insurance companies that the lawyers 4 - 6 weeks is not at all unusual. If there are only a few doctors to deal with, 2 weeks is about average.
