In most Sates, if you don't sign a lease, you are subject to being evicted as a holdover tenant. The type of tenancy is usually a tenacy at will. Unless there are local rules to the contrary there is little that can be done to help. This is especially true if you have been evicted and possession of the premises returned to the landlord. You should have consulted a local atty at the time you were served with the summons and complaint.
