In writing to all three credit reporting bureaus dispute the debt. In writing to the creditor dispute the debt and request damages under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act from the collection agency for alleging a debt that no longer exists. You are entitled to up to $1000.00 in damages under the law for each offense. The creditor will have a certain amount of time to submit to you and to the credit bureaus proof that the debt is still valid.
